Overview

Under the supervision and direction of a pharmacy manager or pharmacist, completes daily

cartfill procedures including Robot dispensing, Automatic Dispensing Cabinet responsibilities first

doses, delivery of medications to patient care areas, repackaging of pharmaceuticals, monthly

nursing station inspections, assembly of non-patient specific IV product and preparation of sterile

compounds utilizing automation.

Responsibilities

  • Completes daily cartfill procedures including Robot-dispensing, manual picks, envelope delivery system, Carousel, cartfill delivery, medication returns processing and restocking on-line inventory.
  • Print daily restocking and or repackaging report identifying medications required to be packaged to ensure that ROBOT-RX off-line and on-line inventories are at optimal levels.
  • Repackages pharmaceuticals, including preparing and affixing all necessary labels to the packaged product. Ensures all doses dispensed comply with barcoding (KBMA) standards.
  • Assists pharmacists as directed with filling medication orders, maintaining appropriate inventories, preparing and delivering IV solutions, understands important of proper stock rotation, medications or supplies to all patient care areas Delivers and retrieves medications to nursing units in a timely manner.
  • Under the direct supervision and verification of a healthcare professional while utilizing automated dispensing cabinet [e.g., Pyxis, Med Select] technology, engages in the replenishing, of automated dispensing machines, including refilling and loading of medications. Facilitate the resolution of Automatic Dispensing Cabinet discrepancies, monitoring medication usage and completion of all documentation.
  • Performs monthly inspections of medications stored in patient care areas including removal of short dated and recent recalled medications; reports deficiencies to pharmacy manager.
  • Facilitate the transfer of discharge prescriptions for patients interested in filling their prescriptions at MMC Pharmacy.
  • Delivers floor stock controlled drugs to nursing units according to established protocols.
  • Assists in the preparation of sterile products as required; using aseptic technique inaccordance with USP-797 guidelines.
  • Knowledge and use of barcode technology program for labeling medications.
  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Maintains compliance with departmental best practices regarding safe medication use and Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Answers phone calls in a professional manner, responds to requests, or triage communications to the appropriate personnel.
  • Act in a proactive manner when an inappropriate pattern is identified or process can be improved assist in developing a better process.

Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree required.

Completion of a technician certification program, certification as Pharmacy Technician by the National Technician Board (PTCB) with required continuing education credits to maintain certification, and a successful completion of department administered qualifying examination, OR

Enrollment or graduation from a medically-related training program (e.g., RN, LPN, RPh), certification as Pharmacy Technician by the National Technician Board (PTCB) with required continuing education credits to maintain certification, and a successful completion of department administered qualifying examination.

Experience:

6 months of experience in a pharmacy is required. Hospital experience preferred.

Skills:

Good oral communication skills.

Good interpersonal skills.

Speaks, reads and writes English to the extent required by the position.
