Job Summary

The Pharmacy Technician assists in providing pharmacy services to Sterling Health Solutions' clinic patients and supports the daily operations of the pharmacy. This position reports directly to the Director of Pharmacy and plays an essential role in ensuring safe, accurate, and efficient medication dispensing.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties:

  1. Assists in dispensing prescriptions by mixing suspensions, counting tablets, or pouring liquids under the supervision of a pharmacist.

  2. Maintains familiarity with correct prescription terminology.

  3. Reviews all prescriptions for completeness and accuracy, verifying patient information and proper provider authorization.

  4. Enters patient data and prescription information into the computer system.

  5. Prepares and prints prescription labels.

  6. Assists with inventory control of medications and supplies, including ordering, receiving, shelving, and routinely checking for outdated medications.

  7. Provides nondrug information to patients and responds to basic inquiries.

  8. Operates the cash register and processes transactions accurately.

  9. Cleans pharmacy equipment and maintains a tidy and organized work area.

  10. Attends required meetings and participates in additional meetings as requested.

  11. Participates in staff development and educational activities.

  12. Maintains strict patient confidentiality in accordance with organizational policies and legal requirements.

  13. Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

Full-time, non-exempt position. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required based on operational needs.

Travel

Travel between health center sites is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Required

  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical practices, prescription medications, and related medical technology.
  • Knowledge of medical safety standards and proper handling of pharmaceutical substances.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public.
  • Ability to read and interpret prescription information accurately.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform arithmetic and pharmaceutical calculations.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, coordinate multiple responsibilities, and adapt to changing demands.
  • Strong judgment and decisionmaking skills.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Ability to demonstrate courtesy and respect toward patients and coworkers.
  • Ability to learn and understand the 340B Drug Pricing Program.

Credentials and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • One year pharmacy experience is preferred.
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician preferred but not required.

Physical Demands

  • Finger dexterity: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
  • Reaching: Frequently required to reach with hands and arms forward and above the head.
  • Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
  • Speaking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely.
  • Visual Acuity: Must have sufficient visual acuity to perform tasks such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing information, viewing a computer screen, and conducting extensive reading. Requires visual abilities including close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

This position requires sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods. It may involve working under stressful conditions or irregular hours. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, body fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common in a clinical environment may occur.
