Job Description
This role offers an opportunity for a detail-oriented and dependable Certified Pharmacy Technician to support licensed pharmacists in a fast-paced compounding pharmacy environment in Fairfield, OH. You will assist with the preparation, distribution, and management of medications, ensuring safe, accurate, and efficient pharmacy operations. The position focuses on prescription preparation, inventory oversight, administrative support, and direct patient interaction, with strong emphasis on quality, safety, and regulatory compliance. It also provides a clear growth path through in-house compounding training and experience-based progression.
Responsibilities
- Assist licensed pharmacists with accurate preparation and dispensing of medications in a compounding (fulfillment) setting.
- Measure, count, and package medications in accordance with prescription guidelines and established protocols.
- Affix appropriate labels to medication containers, including dosage instructions and safety warnings, under pharmacist supervision.
- Input prescription and patient information into pharmacy software systems with a high degree of accuracy.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and confidential patient records in compliance with applicable regulations.
- Monitor medication stock levels and coordinate with suppliers to ensure adequate inventory.
- Conduct regular inventory checks and rotate stock to prevent expired medications from remaining in active inventory.
- Safely dispose of expired, damaged, or recalled medications in accordance with regulatory and organizational procedures.
- Greet patients in a courteous and professional manner and respond to questions or concerns within the scope of a pharmacy technician.
- Assist patients with prescription drop-off and pick-up processes, ensuring clear communication and efficient service.
- Perform routine checks on pharmacy equipment and storage conditions to ensure proper functioning and compliance.
- Participate in quality control efforts, including monitoring expiration dates, maintaining cleanliness, and supporting standard operating procedures.
- Support and maintain a clean, organized, and compliant work environment in all compounding and storage areas.
- Follow all applicable federal, state, and local laws and guidelines related to pharmacy operations and controlled substances.
- Adhere to safety protocols for handling medications, including hazardous and sterile products, to protect patients and staff.
- Collaborate with pharmacists and colleagues to support efficient workflow and high-quality patient care.
- Apply knowledge of pharmacy terminology and prescription abbreviations to interpret and process prescriptions accurately.
- Use basic math skills to calculate quantities, dosages, and compounding requirements under pharmacist supervision.
- Engage in ongoing learning related to sterile and non-sterile compounding techniques as part of the in-house training program.
Essential Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Registration with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy as a Registered or Certified Pharmacy Technician, or eligibility to obtain registration as required.
- Ability to obtain registration with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy as a Certified Pharmacy Technician after approximately 6 months of employment, as required by role progression.
- Familiarity with pharmacy terminology and common prescription abbreviations.
- Understanding of pharmacy laws, regulations, and ethical standards relevant to pharmacy practice.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with patients, pharmacists, and colleagues.
- Active listening skills to accurately follow instructions and respond to patient and pharmacist needs.
- Proficiency in basic math for counting, measuring, and calculating medication quantities and dosages.
- Comfort using pharmacy software systems and electronic health records (EHR) to enter and retrieve data.
- Ability to stand for extended periods during an 8-hour shift.
- Capability to lift up to 40 pounds as needed for inventory and supply handling.
- Manual dexterity and visual acuity to read prescriptions, handle medications, and operate pharmacy equipment safely.
- Interest in or aptitude for sterile and non-sterile compounding in a pharmacy setting.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Completion of a state-approved or Ohio Board of Pharmacy-approved pharmacy technician training program is preferred.
- National pharmacy technician certification (such as PTCB) is preferred.
- Prior experience working in a pharmacy or healthcare setting is advantageous.
- Compounding experience, including sterile or non-sterile compounding, is highly preferred.
- Sterile compounding experience is more strongly preferred, though non-sterile compounding experience is also valuable.
- Pharmacy technician certification (CPhT) is beneficial for career growth and advancement.
- Experience with IV preparation and compounding processes is an asset.
- Ability to progress through compounding skill levels, from entry-level (0-5 months) to advanced (3+ years), aligning with structured pay and responsibility progression.
- Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy in all aspects of medication preparation and documentation.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and maintain accurate records in a high-volume environment.
Work Environment
The position is based in a compounding (fulfillment) pharmacy environment rather than a retail pharmacy setting. The role operates on a first-shift schedule, with start times as early as 8:00 a.m. and standard 8-hour shifts. No weekend work is required; however, weekend shifts may be available for overtime opportunities. You will work primarily in a clean, organized compounding and fulfillment space, handling both sterile and non-sterile preparations under established safety and quality protocols. The environment involves standing for extended periods, lifting up to 40 pounds, and using pharmacy software, electronic health records, and specialized compounding equipment. The workplace emphasizes precision, safety, regulatory compliance, and a collaborative team culture, and offers an in-house compounding training program that supports skill development and career growth.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $23.00/hr.
