The Pharmacy Technician - Medication Access, Neuro Expansion is a hybrid inpatient and outpatient role supporting medication access and patient care coordination across Main Campus. This highly patient-facing, clinically focused position involves extensive collaboration with providers, nurses, and interdisciplinary care teams while spending much of the day walking throughout the hospital to support patient needs. Responsibilities include reviewing insurance coverage, identifying medication access barriers, assisting with prior authorizations, evaluating medication histories, coordinating discharge medication plans, delivering medications to bedside, and helping ensure prescribed therapies are both clinically appropriate and financially accessible. Candidates with backgrounds in inpatient admissions, ambulatory retail, mail order pharmacy, or medication history review are strongly preferred.
A caregiver in this role will work Sunday to Saturday on 4 10-hr shifts between 8:00am and 6:00pm. Weekend rotations will occur every 4th weekend and 1-2 holiday rotations will occur per year.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
- Communicate directly with patients and caregivers while performing technical functions within the assigned work area to ensure timely and accurate procurement of prescriptions and documentation within the electronic medical record when required.
- Identify potential medication-related access problems and work with patients and the multi-disciplinary team to solve these problems in an efficient and patient-centered manner.
- Coordinate education, bedside medication delivery, and medication payment.
- Assist with the development and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure a seamless medication-related procurement process for patients.
- Work with the pharmacy leadership teams to identify areas of opportunity for improved patient experience.
- Assist manager in creating, implementing and monitoring quality control programs in assigned area.
- Conduct third party prior authorization requests when needed.
- Monitor program performance, including patient volumes served and patient experience indicators, serving as a valued resource to identify discharge prescription coverage issues and assist in their resolution.
- Complete medication histories or other transitional care activities as assigned per location.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Six months of related experience OR completion of a Pharmacy Technician Training Program
- Registration as a Certified Pharmacy Technician, Registered Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Technician Trainee with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy
- Upon hire, registration as a Certified Pharmacy Technician, Registered Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Technician Trainee with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy is required. Candidate must be eligible for Registration as a Certified Pharmacy Technician with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy. Registration as a Certified Pharmacy Technician is required within 6 months.
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- Completion of a formal pharmacy technician training program
- Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is preferred at time of hire. CPhT through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required within 18 months
- Experience dealing with third party insurance and prior authorization process
Physical Requirements:
- Typical physical demands include ability to perform the job while standing and walking for prolonged times, approximately 75% of shift and continuously for extended periods of time.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to perform computer and dispensing functions of the job.
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
- Position often includes reaching, stretching, stooping, climbing steps and sitting.
Personal Protective Equipment:
- Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
Pay Range
Minimum hourly: $22.50
Maximum hourly: $32.00
