Responsibilities span the full dispensing workflow, including prescription data entry, patient profile management, insurance and third-party billing, counting and measuring medications, packaging and labeling prescriptions, and customer service duties. This role works under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, well-organized, customer-focused, and committed to accuracy, patient confidentiality, and regulatory compliance. This position does not perform sterile or non-sterile compounding. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Prescription Order Entry. Accurately enter new and refill prescription information (drug, strength, dosage form, directions, quantity, refills, prescriber data) into the pharmacy data processing system for pharmacist verification. Prescription Filling. Count, measure, and prepare prescription medications for pharmacist verification. Select the correct stock bottle, verify NDC and lot information, and follow SOPs for tablet/capsule counting and liquid measuring. Packaging and Labeling. Generate prescription labels, apply auxiliary labels, package prescriptions in appropriate containers, and prepare orders for pharmacist final verification. Package medications for shipping in compliance with pharmacy SOPs. Patient Profile Management. Create and maintain accurate patient records, including demographics, contact information, insurance details, allergies, and current medications, ensuring HIPAA-compliant handling of protected health information. Insurance and Third-Party Billing. Submit electronic claims, troubleshoot and resolve claim rejections (e.g., NDC, days supply, refill-too-soon, plan limitations), coordinate prior authorization requests, and process copays and adjustments. Prescriber and Clinic Communication. Place and receive outbound calls to prescriber offices to obtain non-clinical clarifications (e.g., missing patient information, illegible details), request refill authorizations as permitted by rule, and route any clinical questions to the pharmacist. Prescription Intake and Triage. Receive incoming prescriptions via fax, e-prescribing, mail, and walk-in; verify completeness; flag missing or potentially erroneous information for pharmacist review. Inventory Support. Assist with daily restocking, expiration date checks, drug pulls and returns, and wholesaler ordering as directed by the pharmacist or pharmacy management. Document Management. Scan, index, and file prescription hardcopies, prior authorization documentation, and other pharmacy records. Customer Service Duties. Answer incoming phone calls in a professional manner and route to the appropriate team member; assist patients at the counter and at point of sale; process payments, refunds, and receipts; prepare orders for daily courier pickup; maintain a clean and organized workstation, front-end, and packaging area. Quality and Compliance. Follow all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Texas State Board of Pharmacy rules; ensure that the technician's unique initials or identification code are recorded for every transaction; participate in audit preparation and regulatory inspection support. Other Duties. Other duties as assigned by the Pharmacist-in-Charge or designee. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: N/A. This position is supervised by, and reports to, the Pharmacist-in-Charge or a designated pharmacist. Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or equivalent. Active registration with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Technician Trainee, and in good standing. Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification preferred; Trainees must obtain PTCB (or other Board-approved) certification within two (2) years of trainee registration. One year of pharmacy experience; prior pharmacy, data entry, or customer service experience preferred. Working knowledge of pharmacy terminology, sig codes, NDC numbers, and common drug names preferred. Familiarity with pharmacy management systems preferred. Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office, e-mail, and standard office equipment. Strong typing speed and accuracy; strong attention to detail. Good interpersonal and communication skills with a customer-service focus. Able to work well with others in a team-oriented environment. Professional, outgoing, friendly, and organized. Reliable, ready to learn, and trustworthy. Appearance should reflect positively on the pharmacy. Open and flexible availability. Must have reliable transportation. Must be able to pass a criminal background check and drug testing. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Ability to stand and/or sit at a workstation for extended periods (preferred 8 hours). Able to lift up to 30 lbs. Manual dexterity to operate a keyboard, telephone, scanner, counting tray, and to handle and manipulate small objects such as tablets, capsules, and vials. Visual acuity sufficient to read prescription documents, drug labels, and computer screens accurately. Clean, well-groomed. Daily dress code will be scrubs.
